My Ethical Commitment

You should take all other information into account if you decide to take action based on one of my readings, including seeking out other opinions.

I always use the following ethical guidelines:

Native Land Statement

I am based in a location that was historically populated by the Anishinabewaki, Bodwewadmi (Potawatomi), Wyandot, and Missisauga, according to native-land.ca.

Statement on Use of AI

I understand that AI image and text generators have been built up by unethically using others' creative works without their permission - I don't consider AI training to be fair use. Further, I know that at least some of the big AI models have been trained using material that is itself unethical, such as individuals' medical imaging (again, included without consent) and child sex abuse material. AI model use in creative industries takes rewarding work and recognition away from creators more often than it simply assists them in doing what they want to do. AI models also use a ton of natural resources including huge amounts of water - it's not good for the planet. So now that I've been made aware, I don't give any money to AI products or use new AI products, and I won't do so unless or until I find some that are ethical and sustainable. (I doubt that will happen any time soon.)

I do own and read with decks that were made using AI image generation. All of them except for one were paid for before I understood that the AI models used were not ethical and sustainable. With that other one, I just didn't read the Kickstarter description well enough until after funds were collected. I use them in my personal practice because I've already paid for them and I think it's better than letting them go to waste. But I no longer read for others using these decks because it gives the impression that I'm okay with AI being used in ways that takes work away from other creators.

Art should be about the experience of being alive, not what an algorithm thinks is going to light up someone's brain in the optimal way.
