What are oracle cards?
Oracle cards are a form of divination using cards that do not follow a traditional structure. Tarot has 78 cards divided into specific groups containing specific individual cards. Lenormand has 36 specific cards. An oracle deck doesn’t follow either of those structures and it may or may not have a structure at all.
One oracle deck might have groups of cards for the 5 Pagan elements, and the individual cards might be things related to that element. One oracle deck might have no groups, and all of the cards represent different crystals (like the Radiant Crystal Cards) or different mushrooms (like the Mushroom Spirit Oracle). Another deck might not have a structure or a particular theme (like the Untamed Truth Oracle). Because there aren’t other variations on that specific deck’s cards on the market, it is an oracle deck, even if there are tons of other decks focusing on the same subject.
When should I choose an oracle deck?
It depends on the deck. If I offer readings with a deck and it is best for a specific type of inquiry, I mention that on the Tarot & Oracle page. For example, the Spirit Cats and Witch Cats decks are positive and provide an action you can take. The Dreams & Incarnations and Spirits & Shadows decks are more general, with just a keyword and some art.
If you have any questions about choosing a deck for a reading from me, I’ll be glad to help. If you’re reading for yourself, you may be able to tell by the information on the cards or you may need to do a few test readings to see what kinds of questions it answers well.
Do oracle decks involve reversed cards, like Tarot?
They can; this is another situation where you may have to look at what kind of readings the deck appears to be intended for, or do some testing.
Are oracle decks used with spreads, like Tarot?
Again, they can be, and in this case they often are.
How do you read with an oracle deck?
It’s very similar to reading with Tarot. If you haven’t read my page on Tarot yet, skip down to the section “How do you read with Tarot?” to go straight to that information.
Thanks for reading!
